20 bikes, 21 people.

I have been hanging out for this day because I have had my bike for 2 weeks now and wanted to see how I was going to go. Cruised out to Yarra Glen, passed a few of boys parked there and went to get some fuel. This bike isn’t as fuel efficient as the 750 was. Cannot understand why. Maybe it’s the way I twist the wrist, but who cares because it goes like shit out of a shang-eye. The acceleration and power of the Bandit is AWESOME and you can certainly get an adrenaline rush on hard acceleration. Definitely a good investment. Arrived back to where everybody else was parked. Got off and had a bit of gas bag to a couple of guys who were there. Tim called everybody around and gave a spiel on the corner marking system and gave a run down on the where the ride was going.

We headed off down the Melba Highway and turned right down old Healesville Road to Healesville. Turned left up Chum Creek Road to Toolangi. When we got to Toolangi, we come down Myers Creek Road. On the way up Brad on the TRX ran off the road up the side track. Phil on the ZZR600 followed him also. Neither of them came off their bikes.

Through Healesville and Launching Place to Warburton, where our first stop was which was morning tea. Some of the guys fuelled up. We headed off to Donna Buang. A good ride on the way up; there was a little bit of fog at the top. Ten minutes stop and headed back down. Fog was thicker and the road was hard to see in a couple of places. We came back down from Donna Buang, on our way to Reefton Spur.

Brad followed me up the Spur. I was still coming to grip with the bike’s power. Brad was hard on my heels most of the way. About half way up there was a road on the right with a white gate. We came around the right hander, the rear end broke loose on my bike, hang on for the left hander. Quick glimpse in the mirror and see Brad heading off the road. I thought I should go back and see if he was okay, but decided to keep going. Slowed down a bit, the back tyre starting to slide a bit on the corners (Probably nailing it too hard).

Getting near the top, when some guy in the landcruiser was flashing his headlights and waving his arm out the window. Maybe cops or somebody had gone down. I went around the corner and I see a couple of people standing there. I parked my bike and went to see what is happening.

Eric greets me and said two bikes had gone down. Jeff Hornby ZZR600 and David Nimmo GSXR750. Both bikes had gone over the embankment. Jeff and David were okay. Few more bikes arrived. We flag down a guy driving a Nissan Patrol to see if he had any ropes, but he said no he didn’t. He had a winch on the front but didn’t have a remote control to operate it., He left and we decided to lift the bikes out ourselves. Two guys in a land cruiser stopped to give us a hand. Eight of us dropped over the embankment and proceeded to lift the bike up to the road. (Bike was lying on left hand side). Jeff was next. His was lying on left hand side but front wheel first, about a bike length down. A couple of us had to move/hold a broken branch out of the way so the others could get at the bike. They lifted his bike out as well. David’s bike had broken fairing and indicator, left hand side and had to be taped onto the tank with cable ties. He was a bit embarrassed because his Mum and Dad were on the ride. Jeff’s bike had the least damage: broken mirror and indicator, small dent in the tank and minor scratches.

Brad rolled up on his TRX. It was a bit worse for wear. I told him I saw him run off the road but didn’t stop to find out if anything happened. He said his front wheel let go and that was his only option (go up side road) except when he hit the brakes he hit the ditch and the bike went down. Jeff, David and some of the others headed off but I stayed back and gave Brad a hand to do some repairs to his bike. His bike was the worst. Front guard, fairing, tank, right hand indicator, mirror, brake lever and foot peg was cable tied to the frame, right hand muffler and fibreglass cover around seat was damaged. All bikes had cosmetic damage but were rideable Brads being the worst.

Everybody has gone. Brad and I were last to leave. Jeff and Davids' little spill happened 3 corners from the top of the Spur, so close and yet so far. At the top Ian and a couple of others were waiting for us. Brad went ahead, Ian and myself and somebody else followed him down to Marysville. Food at last. By the time I got there I think it was around the 2.30pm. Got myself something to eat and drink and sat with Tim and a couple of others and discussed the day's events and Tim mentioned he had nearly run of the Chum Creek Rd because an insect had splattered on his visor, blocking his vision in one eye and misjudged where he was going. Because of the lateness in the afternoon the rest of the ride was abandoned and the ride finished at Marysville.
