December 2001 MSTCV Itinerary

Sunday 9th       Lavers Hill via the Great Ocean Road                                                Ray Walker leading

10.15 am West Gate Shell Service Station

Ray’s first ride with the Club was following Ben on this very road. Being his first ride he fell off. Things have changed a lot since then. Join Ray on his new GSXR1000 for a ride down the world famous GO Road. Expect lunch at 1 pm at Lavers Hill and around 500 action packed kilometres for the day. This ride would not suit an inexperienced rider due to the speed and distances involved.

Sunday 16th     Marysville Bakery (short ride)                                                                Dave Ward leading

                        10.15 am Yarra Glen

A thinly veiled Reefton Spur Ride. Nineteen kilometers of uninterrupted bliss. Join Dave on his exotic Ducati 996 SP and fellow “Sporters” for a day of fun and camaraderie. Expect around 200 km for the day.

Sunday 23rd    Mirboo North                                                                                        Ben Warden leading

                        10.15 am Hallam

It has been a long time since I have lead down into this area, the prevalence of short rides and competition to lead reducing the opportunities. Gippsland has the best roads within a day trip of Melbourne. Designed to support milk tankers, the roads are wide. The convicts and farmers did a very thorough job of clearing the land for pasture. This makes for great visibility – and hence safety. You will be amazed how good the roads are down here. Perfect for big bore Japanese Sports bikes. Join me in the quest for the perfect sweeper over an easy 500 km.

26th to 1st         Xmas Camp – see elsewhere for details

January 2002

Thursday 3rd   Social Sip, 7 pm Whitehorse Inn, 5 Burwood Road Hawthorn

Sunday 6th       Eildon via Fraser National Park                                                         Paul Tallents leading

                        10.15 am Yarra Glen

Fri 25th to        Australia Day Weekend, Walwa Pub                                                  Ben Warden leading

Mon 28th         Friday early start 2.30 pm Yarck

Rides depart 9 am Walwa each day

The plan: Get to Walwa Pub, some 130 km east of Albury, Friday night. Ride around some of the best country and roads in the world Saturday and Sunday, a short ride on Monday, then go home.

Option 1: Those riding up can leave in an organized group from Yarck – a common point for those heading up the Maroondah Highway (Black Spur) or via Whittlesea or Yea, or make their own way if work commitments impinge on leaving early. Book your annual leave now. Monday is now a gazetted public holiday, reintroduced now that Mr Kennett is no longer premier.

Option 2: put your bike on a trailer and drive, arriving anytime Friday night, saving on tyre wear. Last year three or four people chose this option.

The deal: it is a long weekend nation wide and accommodation will be scarce. We can book the whole pub, an ideal situation, but we must commit early. The cost of a room is $44 per night. There are 7 rooms – 2 doubles, 4 twin share, 1 six berth. I have tentatively booked six rooms, effectively the whole pub, for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. If you want a room to yourself, pay the money to me as soon as possible - $132. First in, best dressed. If you are happy to share, then find a friend and halve the costs.

Opportunity: You will not get a better opportunity to ride your sports bike in its design element in the company of good friends and good riders. Your riding will improve without doubt. The weather is usually sensational at this time of the year. You only live once. Choose right.
