January 2001 MTCV Itinerary

Sunday 14th Eildon Paul Tallents leading

10 am Whittlesea

I feel the Flowerdale Road and maybe a diversion through Strath Creek and Parrot Creek may be part of this route. Then to Yea and Molesworth to Alexandria. A trip across the scenic Fraser National Park Road to Eildon for lunch a possibility. Home via Marysville and the Black Spur. But then again, Paul could do the whole thing in reverse. Come and find out. Expect around 380 km for the day. Given the early start to beat the heat, note no KBCP pick-up.

Friday 19th Lake Mountain Night Ride Geoff Jones leading

6.30 pm Yarra Glen Pub

Come and join the Geoff Jones and the Club on its annual night ride. Reasonably priced pub food at the only hotel in Yarra Glen, up on the hill. If you can't make it for tea, then the planned leave time is 8.30 pm giving us 45 minutes or so of half light and enough time to negotiate the Black Spur. Sort out your headlight beams before the ride, particularly if you are carrying a pillion and don't wish to illuminate the tree tops, let alone bore holes into the eyes of oncoming drivers. Pay good attention to the corner marking system - if ever it is going to break, it will happen at night. Expect around 30 bikes and people, based on previous years' attendance, and 100 fun packed km.

Sunday 21st Walhalla Geoff Barton leading

10.15 am Hallam

North of the Princes Highway above Moe, Walhalla is an interesting destination, formerly a gold mining town. Often without electricity, it has the dubious honour of being a self declared football free zone in winter and was an Olympics free zone recently. The fact that they are buried so far into the hills that no television signal can penetrate the gloom has nothing to do with it. Geoff will be coming to grips with his new(ish) black ZX7, having seen the light. Given we are in the heart of Gippsland, expect plenty of twisties and around 450 km for the day. Note: no KBCP pickup.

Walwa Hotel, Snowy Mountains Ben Warden leading

Friday 26th to Sunday 28th

We did a day trip from Porepunkah Christmas Camp up across the Granya Gap and around through Walwa to Corryong and back again. Ron Johnston, at every stop exclaimed, "What a fantastic road, I'm definitely coming back here again." First timer. Convert. We will have three days of these roads. All the regulars are already booked in: Rhys Williams, Geoff Barton, Wayne Grant, Bruce Saville, and some not so regulars. At $22.50 a night, bed and breakfast, for your own room, it is a steal! Highlights include The Snowy Mountains Highway, Alpine Way, the Thredbo Rd, the Murray Valley Highway, Lake Hume Road, and the Elliot Way. All bitumen. Senstaional roads and scenery. Best to arrive Thursday night ready to ride Friday morning. Some people are trailering their bikes. Rhys and Geoff are riding over the top on Thursday. Get organised, put in for half a day's leave on the Thursday (Friday is a public holiday), and confirm with Ben to reserve a bed. Ride your bike in its designed environment. Good tyres essential. Be there. Expect 1500 km.

Sunday 28th The Cross, Mt Macedon Ray Walker leading

10.30 am Whittlesea

Can't make Walwa? Come for a spin out west with Ray. Plenty of interesting and scenic roads. Lots of up hill and down dale across to Wallan and Romsey. Could end up in cool Daylesford for lunch. Designated a short ride, expect around 250 km for the day depending on weather and riders.
