September 2001 MTCV Itinerary

Sunday 9th Johns Hill Lookout, Kallista Ian Payne leading 10.15 am Hallam

Ian has spent a large part of his life living in Cockatoo and riding around the Dandenongs on his trusty Honda XL250 that eventually accumulated 100,000 km. That was before he joined the MTCV and was bitten by the sports bike bug. Still, the roads have only got better over the years. Come for a ride and enjoy the views from John’s Hill lookout. Expect around 300 km for the day.

Weekend Bairnesdale, Orbost Ben Warden leading

14th — 16th 3.00 pm Hallam

Certain starters (so far) are Rhys Williams, Ian Payne, Geoff Jones and Ben Warden. It has been a long time since a weekend ride and Rhys brought up the idea at a Social Sip. The plan is to leave Friday afternoon and get as far as Bairnesdale to be ready to ride off bright and early (9am ) Saturday. The route may include Orbost, Cann River, Rockton Junction, Kiah, Eden, Wyndam, Cathcart, Bombala, and back to Orbost Saturday night. Spend Sunday heading home either via Dargo or deep into Gippsland. Expect around 1200 km for the trip. Be there.

Sunday 16th Lavers Hill via GOR Ray Walker leading

9.30 am West Gate Shell Servo

This ride may not suit inexperienced riders due to the distances and technically demanding corners. Make a mistake and you go over a cliff. Nevertheless, the Great Ocean Road offers spectacular, world reknowned riding conditions and views. It is always a popular ride, rain or shine. Due to the heavy build up of traffic in the early reaches, Ray plans to join the GOR at Lorne, have lunch at Lavers Hill, and return via Apollo Bay and the Skene’s Creek road. Note early start.

Sunday 23rd Mt Baw Baw Tim Walker leading

10.15 am Yarra Glen

Tim loves tight, twisty roads. Now that Mt Baw Baw is sealed to the summit, another set of twisties is on the menu. Join Tim for our first visit to Mt Baw Baw in the modern age. The route will include the Powelltown stretch of high and low speed swervery, and possibly the Reefton and Black Spurs. The ride has been designated not suitable for inexperienced riders. Expect around 400 km for the day. With luck you might catch a glimpse of snow en-route.

Sun. 30th Eildon Poker Run Ben Warden leading

10.15 am Whittlesea

At each stop riders will draw a card from a deck of cards. The person getting the best poker hand from 5 cards will receive a prize. A short deck makes it more exciting. That is the formal part of the day. The route will be across the Black Spur to Marysville and Buxton to Eildon for lunch and a card. Depending on the weather we may shoot down the Torbreck River road in search of some fun.

Last card at breakup. Expect around 350 km for the day.
