January 2002 MSTCV Itinerary

Sunday 13th     Reefton and Black Spurs (short ride)                                        Ray Walker leading

                        10.15 am Yarra Glen

Ray is riding safely and fast on his new GSXR1000. Come and join him for some fun. Route will probably include Chum Creek and Myers Creek Roads (ToolangiHealesville roads). Expect around 250 km for the day and an early finish at the bakery. Should be a hoot.

Friday 18th      Lake Mountain Night Ride                                                                   Geoff Jones leading

6.30 pm Yarra Glen Pub to eat, 8.30 pm leave

A social event where you get to refocus your headlight at the ground rather than the trees. The lead rider normally scares away all the animals making for a very pleasurable evening. Bring the missus. Could be a late night, and nippy at the top of Lake Mountain. Expect around 150 km for the evening.

Sunday 20th     Walhalla                                                                                                Ben Warden leading

                        10.15 am Yarra Glen

Heading from Yarra Glen we’ll pick up the magnificent (and scary) Powelltown road down to Drouin for morning tea. Then we’ll head south and deep into Gippsland before eventually crossing the Princes Highway at Morwell cutting in the back way through Tyers to Walhalla. Home via Moe and the bumpy Willow Grove section to Noojee to breakup at Launching place. Big kays. Big fun. This ride may not suit inexperienced riders.

Fri 25th to        Australia Day Weekend, Walwa Pub                                                  Ben Warden leading

Mon 28th         Friday early start 2.30 pm Yarck

Rides depart 9 am Walwa each day

The plan: Get to Walwa Pub, some 130 km east of Albury, Friday night. Ride around some of the best country and roads in the world Saturday and Sunday, a short ride on Monday, then go home.

Option 1: Those riding up can leave in an organized group from Yarck – a common point for those heading up the Maroondah Highway (Black Spur) or via Whittlesea or Yea, or make their own way if work commitments impinge on leaving early. Book your annual leave now. Monday is now a gazetted public holiday, reintroduced now that Mr Kennett is no longer premier.

Option 2: put your bike on a trailer and drive, arriving anytime Friday night, saving on tyre wear. Last year three or four people chose this option.

The deal: it is a long weekend nation wide and accommodation will be scarce. We can book the whole pub, an ideal situation, but we must commit early. The cost of a room is $44 per night. There are 7 rooms – 2 doubles, 4 twin share, 1 six berth. I have tentatively booked six rooms, effectively the whole pub, for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

Opportunity: You will not get a better opportunity to ride your sports bike in its design element in the company of good friends and good riders. Your riding will improve without doubt. The weather is usually sensational at this time of the year. You only live once. Choose right.

So far: 15 starters, looking at booking rooms at Jingellic Pub, about 4 km away, to cater for overflow

Sunday 27th     Café Cruise                                                                                               Ian Payne leading

11 am Cavalli Café, 161 Fitzroy St St Kilda

Join Ian on a leisurely cruise from café to pizza shop to Kew Boulevarde for an ice cream
