July 2002 MSTCV Itinerary

Sunday 7th       Strathbogie Ranges                                                                          Ron Johnston leading

                        9.15 am Yarra Glen

Note early start time. This ride is marked as not suitable for inexperienced riders. It offers all manner of road conditions from brilliant sweeping corners to well worn, badly maintained (pot holed, bumpy) narrow, country, secondary roads. The Strathbogie Ranges are accessed via Merton. We’ll be working the areas between Longwood and Euroa including Ruffy, Strathbogie, Boho South and possibly Violet Town. Very interesting country. Expect around 500 hard kilometres for the day, finishing at Healesville.

Sunday 14th     Navigation Trial (short ride)                                                                    Les Leahy leading

                        10.15 am Whittlesea

As usual Les has put a lot of time and effort into the planning of this ride so please make the effort to attend.  The day will run along the following lines: the group will be divided up into two teams. Each team must answer a list of simple questions requiring them to visit various places to garner the information. Either the team can travel as a group or divvy up the workload into smaller teams and then all regroup at some point. Meanwhile Les will be happily sipping coffee in some warm place, eg Yea, awaiting our return.

The event will start at Whittlesea where maps and questions will be handed out. The likely area of interest is bounded by Wandong, Broadford, Strath Creek, Yea, Flowerdale and Whittlesea. We are likely to visit spur roads to such places as Clombinane, Reedy Creek and Humevale. Expect less than 200 km for the event and it is likely to finish around lunchtime. Should the weather be “glorious” then Les may lead us on a slightly longer route home. These events are always fun, rain or shine. Be there.

Sunday 21st     Pig & Whistle Counter Lunch, East Trentham (short ride)         Ian Payne leading

                        10.15 am Yarra Glen

From Yarra Glen we’ll head out to Strath Creek via Christmas Hills, St Andrews, Kinglake and Flowerdale. By this stage Ian will have informed the pub of the number of eaters – don’t forget to tell Ian if you are attending – there are limited seats – see elsewhere for more info. Next stop via the pub picking up some great roads though Broadford, Pyalong, Lancefield, Woodend and finally Trentham East. Expect around 200 easy kilometres for the day. Ride would suit a pillion – but dress very warmly!

Sunday 28th     Lavers Hill via Great Ocean Road                                            Pete Weyermayr leading              9.30 am West Gate Shell Service Station

Ray Walker is unavailable to lead this ride so Pete has stepped into the breach. Our standard Great Ocean Road Ride will see us depart relatively early and head along the West Gate Freeway leaving the Highway at Little River and working our way down to Lorne via Deans Marsh. Next stop Lavers Hill with a probable regroup just on the other side of Apollo Bay for the final fling before lunch. Pumpkin soup is the go at the shop/servo. Heading home we’ll probably take the Skenes Creek Road back to Forest and Moriac where the TLs must refuel. Break-up at the West Gate Servo. Alternatively we may head north from Lavers Hill towards Colac and beyond. Expect 550 cold km over excellent motorcycling roads offering spectacular coastal scenery views. Traffic should be light this time of year – the Committee has been careful to avoid the school holiday period when planning the itinerary. An epic ride. Be there.
