September 2002 MSTCV Itinerary

Sunday 8th            Castlemaine Economy Ride                                                                     Ian Payne leading

                        10.15 am Whittlesea

How does it work? Firstly we all fill up to the brim at Whittlesea, then ride as per normal to another servo and refill. The person that puts in the least amount of fuel wins. By inference they must have the best fuel economy, if we all travel the same distance. There is an annual trophy presented for this event and the winner gets their name etched on it – if I can find it!  Ian will choose where we fill up, either at the morning tea break or at lunch. It is important that riders do not travel too slowly, both holding up the ride and creating a risk for other road users and themselves. To avoid this we sometimes stipulate that if you are passed by the rear rider then you are disqualified. Serious stuff, but it certainly keeps the ride moving. Normally a very competitive event and lots of fun. Expect around 350 km for the day.

Sunday 15th               Mt Baw Baw                                                                                                      Tim Walker leading

                        10.15 am Yarra Glen

Mt Baw Baw is fifty km past Noojee and is reached by a tight and twisty road, often in the lee of the mountain and hence the road surface, in places, is sometimes wet, and sometimes green and with algae. Given that it is another 50 km back to civilization, this ride requires plenty of concentration and skill, and thus is more suited to experienced riders. On a positive note, I find the green roads often look worse than they really are, the algae worn off the surface but still in the cracks. Hence grip seems unaffected.  The route may include a little extra before the first stop at Noojee, possibly up Chum Creek Road and down Myers Creek road to make it an even 100 km to Noojee via Powelltown. Whatever happens you will get your fill of lightly travelled, twisty roads. Expect around 380 km of tyre munching for the day.

Sunday 22nd              Pyalong                                                                                              Ron Johnston leading

                        10.15 am Whittlesea

Pyalong is an easy 110 km from Whittlesea via Strath Creek and Broadford. After the first break we will work our way around through Emu Flat to Lancefield. Unclear as which way we will return but there are plenty of more open roads out west. Ron usually researches his rides very well and leads us down interesting and rarely seen roads. Always interesting. Expect around 400 km for the day. Be there.

Sunday 29th              Reefton and Black Spurs (short ride)                                            Dave Ward leading                        10.15 am Yarra Glen

The title says it all really. There are a couple of mountains in the vicinity – Mt Donna Buang and Lake Mountain, either of which would add a few more corners and increase the fun factor. The real question is, which bike will Dave turn up on? Expect morning tea at Warburton (via Mt Donna Buang) if you are late and chasing the ride and an early finish at Marysville, leaving the return ride home over the Black Spur.
