February 2003            MSTCV Itinerary

Sunday 9th       Lavers Hill via the Great Ocean Road                                                Ray Walker leading

9.30 am West Gate Shell Servo

Come and join Ray on his first lead since taking a short enforced break. Probable route will be down the Freeway taking the little River exit down to Lara, back roads skirting around Geelong down through Forrest to Lorne, avoiding the bumpy, heavily policed and busy first part of the Great Ocean Road. But!  Given that the Lara Road parallel to the highway is now down to 80 km/h, and the Geelong urban sprawl is steadily advancing and consuming our back roads, we may head from Werribee to Anakie and Maude, then south to Winchelsea and then follow the normal route. Longer, but quicker. Lunch at Lavers Hill, then back to Apollo Bay and Skene’s Creek. Excellent roads. Note early start time. Ride not suitable for inexperienced riders or those on their first Club ride. Expect around 550 km for the day.

Sunday 16th     The Cross, Mt Macedon                                                                   Trevor Harris leading

                        10.15 am Whittlesea

This could be Trevor’s first lead, certainly his first in the last 5 years at least. So come and join him on a stress fee ride, easy ride, with possibly our first stop at Woodend. Come and inspect the drought ravaged countryside at first hand. Then up to The Cross affording spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. There is a short walk, but no entry fee. Expect around 380 km for the day.

Sunday 23rd    Highlands                                                                                     Pete Weyermayr  leading

                        10.15 am Yarra Glen

A number of routes spring to mind. Wherever we go, Pete will pick the best combination of our favourite roads. Kinglake, Flowerdale, Strath Creek and Yea will figure in the mix. We may find ourselves on the Molesworth road and the Black Spur, either at the start or finish of the ride, depending on whether the ride is run in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction. Plenty of twisty roads, and I suspect ideally suited to spirited riding – lots of smooth, wide sweepers. Expect around 320 km for the day.

March 2003

Sunday 2nd      Reefton and Black Spurs                                                                    Ray Walker  leading

                        10.15 am Yarra Glen

Usually a well attended ride. Everyone knows the roads. The Reefton offers the best sports bike riding close to Melbourne with its uninterrupted swervery for 19 kilometres. Watch out for oncoming vehicles and not over cooking it as the road rewards smooth riding and has little margin for error. Challenging, yet exhilarating. Of world wide fame. Ray may throw ina mountain pass as well, such as Mt Donna Buang as the warm up. Expect around 300 km of hard riding for the day. It is marked as not suitable for inexperienced riders or first time Club riders. The culture shock that hits first time Club riders makes it unwise, and statistically dangerous for them to ride the Spurs with us. Don’t invite a buddy.

Sunday 9th       Kinglake (short ride)                                                                           Bruce Saville leading

                        10.15 am Yarra Glen

Join Bruce for a blat around the hills. Expect around 210 km of fun for the day.
