Ben to the rescue again – two leaders pulling out. They missed a good ride!

Michael  left the ride coming down the Myers Creek Road for unknown reasons. Ian blamed him being passed by a girl (me) and a chook chaser (Rhys). It was very foggy across the top of Toolangi and the road was damp. Michael doesn’t know what good conditions he missed after that cold and foggy section. I was probably extra excited because I haven’t done the Spurs for a couple of years, before the resurfacing of the Black Spur and the making of link between Cumberland Junction and Lake Mountain.

Smoko at Warburton, then up Donna where Martin gets out his latest gadget to compare tyre temps.

Lies, dam lies and toys. The above readings were taken in a very unscientific manner. Ideally we would have taken the temperatures in the order the bikes rolled in. Not the case. Also the temperature is dependent on the wind speed. A breath of cold wind will upset the reading. For instance, Ken’s front tyre reading of 34 was taken 10 minutes after we stopped – the first reading was in the 20s and looked wrong. Not sure if the distance the reading is taken from the tyre affects the reading or not. About the only generalisation we could say was that those riders with soft compound race tyres seemed to be running at hotter temperatures. …Ed.

Martin also took a noise reading of my exhaust system: 105dB at 5400 rpm.

Then back down to Warburton and left turn towards Upper Yarra Dam. Rhys needed fuel and went and topped up, catching up with the ride. He told me he bought the KTM because he was trying to slow down – yeah, sure!

It was a fantastic ride across the Reefton Spur to Cumberland Junction  where we regrouped. It seems like there was about 40 bikes up there including John and Eric. I don’t know if it was the resurfacing or that I haven’t done the Reefton for such a long time, but it was horn! Ben showed a complete lack of decorum and asked why I was all hot and sweaty. Mind your own business. Magic road that is.

On to Marysville, lunch and breakup. Grouse ride all the way home after slotting in behind Ben. I didn’t even notice Martin behind us until we got to Greensborough. What an awesome ride.

Thanks Ben and all.
