The Lone Riders – Whittlesea Adventure (aka Pyalong MKII)

It’s Sunday the 30th. The bike is out of the shed and the tyre pressures have just been checked, when low and behold it starts to rain. Great… on goes the wet weather gear and I am off on my way to Whittlesea for the start of another riding adventure.

I reached the meeting point at 9.50am to find no-one else there. I wondered how many riders would come out and play for the day. Not many, I thought, considering most of the regular riders were on the Snowy Mountains ride and with the beginning of daylight savings I was quite sure there would be a few still snoozing away in bed. Tony and Simon soon arrive and we get to talking while we wait for Ian the ride leader for the day. We talk, we wait, talk and we wait some more. It finally becomes apparent that Ian won’t be turning up today, so we decide that seeing as we were already out, we’d go for a ride anyway, so Tony gets his map out and we plan our trip – we decide we will ride to Lancefield and go on from there.

So up through Flowerdale, Broadford and Pyalong, I take the lead and Tony and Simon take turns as rear rider until we stop in Lancefield for our first fuel stop. We grabbed some food and a drink. The map comes out again: Kyneton will be our next destination. Tony takes off as leader and Simon brings up the rear. We head down the Bourke and Wills track, take a left and went through Sidonia and on to Kyneton where there was another short stop for some food and another look at the map: next destination Whittlesea.

Simon took the lead to Trentham via Tylden and I took up rear duties. In Trenton Tony resumed as leader again and led us through Ashbourne and Woodend where Simon and myself swap rear riding positions. We continued to follow Tony through Romsey, Wallan and on to Wallan East.

There was quick chat at an intersection: Eden Park twisties our next road to conquer. I took the lead up Eden Park twisties which we had decided to go up and back down again. From there Simon led us on to Whittlesea where we ended the ride: at total of 290kms.

Thanks to Tony and Simon for sharing leading and rear riding duties with me in our small group. It turned out to be a great day.
