What to Pack for an Overnighter

The weather forecast for the weekend ride and overnight stay at Orbost was very dubious; predictions of rain and thunder. The preceding days leading up to the event were warm and sunny and I was hoping the fine weather would continue for the weekend. My initial thoughts were of travelling light and having the normal seat bag only, with a few extra clothes stacked under the seat of the Blackbird.

The dubious forecast meant the Wet Weather gear needed to be packed as well, so now I had no choice but to fit the Ventura Rack and ‘Big Bag’ to the bike. Not my preferred option, but necessary.

I arrived at Yarck which was the starting point for the trip and was greeted by Dave Ward’s riotous laughter – “Pete, it’s only an overnighter!” I should point out that I also had the normal seat bag on the bike so it looked like I had enough clothes for three people for three nights. The seat bag has the camera, wallet, sun-glasses, mobile phone, Mr Sheen, chain lube and the usual necessities for each ride. The ‘system’ works well and one I’m reluctant to change!

So the Ventura Bag looks full but……

Here is what I took and the order they were packed: black runners, black pants and belt, long sleeve T-shirt, jumper - all for Saturday night. White T-shirt, jocks and socks – for the ride home. The bag was still very empty, so an extra few items were selected: boxer shorts, shorts/bathers, tracksuit, wet pack, extra socks and jocks.

Now the wet weather gear: raincoat and pants, gloves – winter, gloves – waterproof, neck warmers – thick and thin. There was still room for more but there was nothing else I needed.

During the ride, I took time to observe the carry bags the others had used, then what the boys were wearing for dinner on Saturday night. The fact that we were ‘ushered’ to a back room for dinner had nothing to do with poor dress sense.

The following morning, there was a slight chill in the air and spare items of clothing were loaned, for the walk to the local shop for breakfast. Over-packed I ask? Practical I reply!

And besides, irrespective of how much or how little luggage one takes, or how much wind resistance one Ventura Bag has, it’s the opportunity to ride with your mates that counts! Come rain, hail or shine!

Thanks guys for a fun weekend….

p.s. And for the record, the wet weather gear was well used during the weekend.
