May 2006                     MSTCV Itinerary

Sunday 7th       Alexandra                                                                                         Paul Southwell leading

10 am Yarra Glen

Across to Healesville, up Chum Creek Rd, down Myers Creek Road, across the Black Spur to Marysville for morning tea and splash of fuel after 80 km. Then up to Buxton and Taggerty, on to Thornton and Eildon before scooting around Skyline, Alexandra, and the fabulous Molesworth Road for late lunch at Yea. A short squirt to Kinglake West should see the ride finish early.  If the weather is excellent, then the option of heading directly to Warburton and around the Reefton Spur may be taken up. Expect around 280 km for the day, with a wide variety of mainly twisty roads. As always this time of year, expect the unexpected weatherwise and always carry your waterproof jackets and pants. It is no fun getting cold.

Sunday 14th     Strathbogie Ranges                                                                           Ron Johnston leading

                        10 am Whittlesea

Whittlesea to Yea for possible first break is about the only certainty on this ride. One option is to head up to Highlands and around to Seymour before heading north to Longford and Euroa and back down to Strathbogie. Another option is to head south from Longford to Ruffy and Gobur and then up to Strathbogie via Merton. Another option from Highlands is to head for Caveat and beyond. I think you get the picture. So long as we can get Ron to stop every 100 km or so and there is no dirt, it should be fine. Lots of interesting scenery on seldom travelled roads. Join Ron for this journey of discovery. Expect 450 km for the day and hopefully not too late a finish.

Sunday 21st     Toora Wind Farm                                                                                    Peter Feistl leading

                        10 am Berwick

First stop Korumburra for morning tea via Drouin if you are chasing the gang. Then back roads to Fish Creek and Toora to check out the controversial wind farm. The blades kill birds, apparently. Some investigation of the roads north of the highway around Agnes Falls rejoining at Welshpool for fuel before heading to Yarram for lunch. After lunch we’ll pick up the Hyland Highway (a misnomer if ever there was one) all the way to Traralgon, riding past the giant Hazelwood coal burning power station. On to Moe with options for the final route home depending on weather and available light. Most likely break up at Robinhood on the highway, 90 km from Melbourne. Expect around 450 km for the day.

Sunday 28th     Seymour                                                                                             Trevor Harris leading

                        10 am Yarra Glen

Across to Healesville, up Chum Creek Road to Toolangi, across to Mt Slide and Kinglake, then down to St Andrews and across to Yan Yean and Whittlesea for our first stop after 100 km. Then up to Flowerdale, left to Strath Creek, right to Kerrisdale and the back way into Seymour via Tallarook. After lunch we’ll head across to Pyalong, continue west to Emu Flat, Kyneton, Spring Hill, Woodend (fuel stop) and then back east picking up Romsey and Wallan to end in Whittlesea. Expect around 350 km of twisty roads for the day. Note: 1.3 km of good dirt road after Emu Flat.

Sunday 4th       Reefton Spur via St Andrews                                                                  Joel Haley leading

                        10 am Yarra Glen

First ride on the new itinerary. The title pretty much defines the route: Christmas Hills, St Andrews, Kinglake, Healesville, Warburton, Reefton, Marysville with appropriate stops on route. Break up in Healesville via Black Spur. Could be snow! Expect around 220 km for the day. Wear warm clothes.
