Who’s News                March 2007

The MSTCV Home Page accumulated 611 hits during March, up 54 from last month. Total visits are 34,695 since April 1996.  No changes to web page last month. Yes, I must put up more photos. I did take another 4-500, mainly in Tassy.

Seen at the Social Sip at the Mark’s Place on Thursday 1st March: Ben and Julie Warden, Paul and Jo Southwell, Craig Morley and Robyn Dolan, Ian Payne, Bevan Roberts, Trevor Harris and Barbara Rolfe, Misho Zrakic, Peter Feistl and Bill Wee. Map of Tasmania and proposed routes and accommodation dominated some conversation time with trip to commence in two days. 13 people

The Club Participant of the Year is based on aggregate points accumulated at 1 point per ride, an extra point for leading or being rear rider, and 1 point per magazine article (maximum 2 per magazine). Attending one or more days of a weekend event scores 3 points for leading, 3 for rear riding duties and 2 points for participating.

The top 10 point scores after eleven months of the 2006/7 count are: Ben Warden (97), Ian Payne (67.5), Paul Southwell (57), Ron Johnston (49.5), Cameron Stevens (42.5), Lyn Duncan (39), Breht Emmerson (37), Dave Ward (35.5), Ern Reeders (34) and Trevor Harris (31). Cameron moved another place up the rankingsover the last month, otherwise status quo maintained.

Front Cover:  Old Lyall open cut mine, Tasmania, Wednesday 7th March 2007.  From left to right: Ian Payne, Dave Ward, Bronwyn Manifold, Renzo Cunico, Paul Southwell, Peter Feistl and Rob Langer. Ben Warden behind the lens. Julie heading east in the car. We are evil doers here, having climbed through a barbed wire fence to reach this unadvertised, yet spectacular (if somewhat dangerous) sight.

BikeGuard Insurance. A new player has emerged in the market offering cheap insurance. Two members have already taken up the offer. Check out the web site at www.bikeguard.com.au

There is a certain deja vu about this next item. Paul Southwell crashed on the Mt Baw Baw ride, Sunday 18th March. See full description in article. He hopes to have his bike back on the road to lead the Dargo via Licola weekend ride on Saturday 14th March. He is actively pursuing other transport options should the bike not be ready. Any offers of wheels much appreciated.  Note: Paul has changed jobs and now has new contact details:  mobile 0407 714 919 and email [email protected]. These details have been added to the Club Contact page on the web should you lose this magazine, god forbid.

Dave Ward has purchased the latest (and greatest) Ducati 1098 – in Tasmania. He expects to take delivery after Easter which may require a trip over to collect. Why Tasmania? There is a 6 month waiting list on the mainland and each state receives a designated number of bikes. Dave happened to grab the last one assigned to Tassy. His beautiful Kawasaki ZX10 was traded as part of the deal.

Ostensibly looking for a replacement front tyre, Renzo Cunico dropped around last Saturday on a Ducati 916 SP! He had just purchased it from a prestige car auction house. I believe a few members knew about it. It has a 22,000 genuine km on the odometer, and the full service history. The first owner was a well known mechanic from a local bike shop who had and maintained it for the first 18,000 km and still loves it. The second owner appears to have only ridden in straight lines, judging by the tyres, and it may have been repossessed, hence the auction. The bike is mint. Renzo offered me a ride so I changed out of my chain sawing attire and donned the gear. Tall first gear, rattles like crazy, still looks fantastic with all the good bits – fully floating Brembo brakes, Termilogi (?) pipes, Ohlins forks, shock, steering damper, chipped. Only 500 sold at $38K and most raced in Australia. Good work Renzo. Hope to see it on a Club ride.

Keep your eye out for Stoimen Stojanov on a racetrack near you. He has kitted out his beloved R1 in full race glass, slick tyres, suspension mods, and is racing. I have asked for his racing calendar but at the time of printing it has not arrived. If interested contact  him at [email protected]

Email from Geoff Jones: New AGV helmet, in sight of You Yangs, at around $200+, took the hit on left shoulder, chip out of the helmet paint and a bruise under my chin and left side of neck so bits of the magpie must have come under the bottom edge of the helmet. Blood and guts on helmet and Dri-Rider. I assume Magpie fatality. Visor detached and damaged the holder on the right side, glasses okay and became only eye protection for rest of ride. New visor purchased, broken part on back order. Also had a fork seal leak after a fork service, back in for correction.  [email protected]

Email from Mark Rigsby on Friday 9th March:  I have been riding every Sunday but I am getting out on the road by 6am and home by 10am. My wife is 10 weeks pregnant and has had morning sickness bad for the last 4 weeks (should call it 24 hour sickness!) Hence I need to be home on the weekend with the exception of early Sundays. Funny, we built a house last year that took up a lot of my time. This year we are "building" a new (second) child that is already taking up a lot of my time!

I've got my mum coming down from Brisbane over Easter to help out so I am taking off for a week to tour up to Qld with a mate who I race marshall with. Hope to be able to join a Sunday ride soon and attend a Social Sip.  [email protected]

Rob Langer has purchased a late model BMW R1150 GS. Gun metal grey, and looking immaculate, it has many more options compared to his earlier model – which incidentally he still has.  It has the smaller tank, top box and panniers. Rob had a great time around Tassy on his old GS, showing us a clean pair of heals on the dirt sections, and giving us a run for our money on the tighter sections. Shame he missed out on the last day’s riding as he would have loved it. Someone asked why he bought another one. Simple answer; because he loves them. What better reason could there be.

Email from Mary Thompson, received Wednesday 4th April. Hey Ben. I gotta get your map back to you sometime. I am in Sydney at the moment, so won't be back till after 17th April. As such, will miss yet another Sip! On the news front, I am mental with work. I have had one day off in the last 35 days, and it looks like April, May and now June will be the same. I can't complain though as every day is another 50 cents!!!

The ZX9 has 73,000 kms on it now!!! I plan on keeping this bike...forever! Not saying I won't buy anything else, but the 9's now not worth anything with those kms, so it's a keeper! As such, I am considering spending $6-10K on a shaft drive tourer of some description. In order of preference, here are the considerations: 1. BMW K1200RS   2. BMW K1100RS (only if it was mega late model and low low kms)   3. BMW R1100RT   4. BMW R1100GS   5. Kawasaki GTR1000 (They are just so cheap.) Must haves are panniers and a top box. Would prefer with heated grips, cruise and maybe a heated seat. If anyone has any tips or hints with any of these, or personal experience, their opinion would be welcomed. Also if any club members have any of these for sale? (Rob Langer? …Ed.)

I had call from Mick (Misho) Zrakic today, Thursday 5th April. He reports that is he suffered no ill effects from his minor crash on the St Andrew’s Road after the finish of last Sunday’s hectic ride to Highlands.  He basically ran wide, pulled the bike up in a straight line, then lost the front wheel at low speed in the gravel.  More interesting is his other news. He visited Fowles Auctions yesterday and picked up Danny Hawker’s yellow Suzuki GSXR750, last seen on the Rosewhite Road with a dead snake nearby.  He plans to put it back on the road and already has the motor going. I gave him the details of C&C Engineering in Thomastown who can straighten the exhaust system for him.
