Who’s News               November 2007

The MSR Home Page accumulated 863 hits during November. Total visits are 39,985 since April 1996.  It is now the primary source of new members. As no itinerary was printed, it is the only source of information on upcoming rides.  Any feedback appreciated. (Apart from more photos to be added to the site.)

Seen at the Social Sip on Thursday 1st November: Ian Payne, Paul Southwell, Trevor Harris and Barbara Rolfe, Peter Feistl, Bill Wee, Ron Johnston, Craig Morley, Bernie Foley, Dave Ward and Bronwyn Manifold, Ben and Julie Warden, Renzo Cunico, and Clifford Peters. 15 people

The Club Participant of the Year is based on aggregate points accumulated at 1 point per ride, an extra point for leading or being rear rider, and 1 point per magazine article (maximum 2 per magazine). Attending one or more days of a weekend event scores 3 points for leading, 3 for rear riding duties and 2 points for participating.

The count is for the 2007/8 year ending at the 2008 AGM in May. Top ten totals after 7 months are: Ben Warden (72.5), Dave Ward (48.5), Ian Payne (46), Paul Southwell (36.5), Cameron Stevens (24), Trevor Harris (21), Misho Zrakic (21), Geoff Jones (20.5), Marty Thompson (18), Ron Johnston (15), and Nic Jacka (15). Marty Thompson jumps from outside to 9th and Misho has moved up another place. Dave Ward, closing fast on Ian Payne last month, has moved into outright second position.

Kneeling: Paul Southwell, Clifford Peters, Misho Zrakic and Willem Vandeveld. Ben behind the lens. Thanks to Peter Feistl for artwork.

Welcome to new member Willem Vandeveld riding a Honda ST1300. He has been on four rides of the Gippsland variety. It will only get easier from now on.

Jean Eldridge has joined the Club riding a Bandit 250. See his trials and tribulations in his Melbourne Cup Weekend write-up as he battles machine, the elements and himself.  If he shows this much determination, he’ll be in for a great and long time with the MSR.

Sam Sirianni has also rejoined after quite a few years absence. He is riding an R1 now but still has his beloved TL1000 in the garage, unable to part with it. I see that he rides as fast, or faster, than ever; particularly on the roads near home.

Welcome to new member Bernie Foley who usually rides a GSXR600 but was last seen on his DR650.  Bernie works with Craig Morley as a driver and just loves what we do.

Welcome to new member Paul Stavrakas who finally joined after completing quite a number of rides spaced out over a year or so. He has the dubious distinction of bringing along mates who fall off. He rides a Honda CBR1000 and loves to go fast. I think he has found the right club. We wish Paul and all the new and returned members, long, happy and safe riding with the MSR.

Email from Ern Reeders:  “Hey Ben, Well in the eyes of the law I'm now responsible enough to pilot a vehicle on the roads again. Got a new license and the VicRoads lass was canny enough to notice I was motorcycle qualified but it wasn't showing up on the new database entry.  She got it sorted.  Phew! Broady track day will get me back up to speed nicely and maybe I'll have the nerve to risk the license on the following Sunday ride.”

Email from Barb Peters (wife of member Clifford Peters) complete with photos: “Introducing my darling grand-daughter, Victoria Lea Peters. Born on the 26th November, 2007 at 10 pm, weighing 3.42 kgs. Mother (Heidi) and Father (Jason) both tired but doing well.”

Email from Peter Jones after Melb Cup Epic: “After a week I have been able to complete the write up for day one. Writing this made me relive some of the trip. I'm still enjoying it. Hope you like what I've written, I’m being as honest as I can. Can we get some pictures on a disk? My family want to see some of my experience.”

Email from very occasional rider, Dean von Schill: “Hey Ben, just a quick note to let you know I have bought a GSXR1000 K2 to race next year with Hartwell. Hence, I haven’t been able to make it to many rides with you guys, hopefully soon.  These pics are from track day at Broadford. I got my lap times down to 1:03s. Pretty happy. Actually, very happy. Might have to speak to Dave Ward about where I can get cheap slicks. Stay upright, Deano.”

Who’s Bruised, a much smaller tome than last time, thankfully.  Shane Hindle crashed his pristine Suzuki GSXR600 on Day Three (Nov 5th) of the Melbourne Cup weekend ride around 11.30 am. He failed to negotiate a bend and ran wide on a steep downhill section, the bike sustaining major cosmetic damage including all fairings and a holed radiator. This occurred on the Khancoban to Cabramurra Road 12 km before Cabramurra. Shane survived unscathed except for emotional loss and regret. The bike was initially transported by a council ute and then a tow truck. Shane ended up hiring a car in Cooma and driving back to Lara, arriving home early the next morning. We wish Shane a speedy recovery and hope to see him riding again soon.

First time rider Murat Cam, also riding a GSXR600 with lots of bling, crashed on the Powelltown twisties on the Thompson Dam ride, notorious for crashes, and advertised as not suitable for first time riders. This is a difficult situation for the Committee to manage, particularly as a member invited the guest. Thoughtful input from the membership is welcome. Talk to any Committee person.

Tony Raditsis crashed on his way home from the same Thompson Dam ride, a few kilometres from home. He hit a large bump on a bridge and doesn’t remember much else. He suffered a level three AC joint (shoulder) issue which I think means he doesn’t need an operation, but has to wear a sling for three to four weeks. Tony has heard that the bike was run over twice, once by a four wheel drive. It has been retrieved from the local farmyard and is not a pretty picture, the frame bent in four places, with no fairings or headlight, instruments dangling. After five crashes on the mighty TRX, I think it has taken a 4WD to finish it off. It was insured. We wish Tony a speedy recovery (he notes he had a good sleep last night (5th Dec) and look forward to seeing him on his new bike!

Ern Reeders is back on the road after 10 months penance. His first outing is likely to be the Broadford Ride Day this weekend, courtesy of a non-member who had ridden with us a few times, liked the way we were organised, and donated the ticket.  Why? He just survived a heart attack! Welcome back Ern.
