January 2007                        MSTCV Itinerary

Sunday 14th    Daylesford                                                                                          Trevor Harris leading

                        10 am Whittlesea

Leaving Whittlesea we’ll head for Flowerdale, Strath Creek, Kerrisdale and Tallarook to Broadford for our first break.  Then it's Lancefield for lunch after travelling through Pyalong and Emu Flat (1.5 km of good dirt) and down the Burke and Wills track.  After lunch we head for Daylesford by heading back up the same Track and continue on to Kyneton via Pastoria East.  When we have had our fill of the sights, sounds and smells of Daylesford its back to where we started via Woodend, Romsey and Wallan.  Expect around 320 km for the day.

Friday 19th      Night ride, Lake Mountain                                                                          leader required

6.30 pm Yarra Glen Pub, 8.30 pm leave

Geoff Jones was pencilled in to lead this one but unfortunately due to circumstances under his control, he can’t do so. So we need someone to step into the breach. Typically we have a fine meal at the pub and then head off just as the sun is setting allowing a little time to get used to riding in the fading light before the abject darkness of Lake Mountain. Healesville, Black Spur, Marysville, Lake Mountain and return to Healesville for a coffee sees the night all over by about 11.30 pm after 140 km.

Sunday 21st     Mt Baw Baw                                                                                             Ian Payne leading

                        10 am Berwick

The route will encompass Ian’s usual good back roads up through Gembrook and Hoddles Creek picking up the Powelltown Road to Noojee for morning tea and fuel. It is a 100 km return trip to Mt Baw Baw and back, this time for lunch.  Home will be via the Neerims (South, East) and around through Jindivick picking up the highway at Robin Hood.  This ride may not suit inexperienced riders, according to the itinerary. What this really means is that a lot of people crash on this ride, particularly first timers. So be warned – and be careful. Good tyres are essential. Expect around 260 km of twisty roads for the day.

Thurs 25th       Towong, Snowy Mountains ride                                                          Ben Warden leading

to Sun 28th      (see elsewhere for more details, bookings essential)

Sunday 28th     Reefton Spur via Cockatoo                                                                          leader required

                        10 am Yarra Glen

Breht was down to lead this one but without a bike it could be difficult!  Anyone? The route may follow a similar path to Ian’s lead from the previous week, before heading to Warburton for morning tea.  Then around the Reefton Spur with the gravel much improved now, before stopping at Marysville for lunch. Depending on the time and weather, options abound including a loop across to Buxton, Merton and Yea to break up at Kinglake West. Expect between 200 and 320 easy kms for the day.

                        10 am Berwick

Loch first stop for morning tea if you are running late. Then on to Mirboo North with a smidge of dirt near Arawata. After lunch we’ll continue north through Thorpdale and on to Coalville and Moe. Break-up at Longwarry North via Jindivick. Another option is to continue on through the Neerims and Noojee to break-up at Powelltown. Tons of twisty, seldom used roads. You’ll need plenty of meat on your tyres as the roads are very abrasive. “One last ride” won’t wash. Expect around 350 km for the day.
