The skies were clear as I left home for my seventh ride with the club.  The traffic was light heading out to Whittlesea from where Ben was to lead us across central Victoria to what is left of Lake Eppalock.

Even though I was a little early arriving, there were quite a few bikes lined up near the servo.  It turned out another club had decided to meet at the same spot.  I found Ben, and casually asked if he had a rear rider – he hadn’t, so I volunteered, my first time as rear rider.

Like Sam the sheepdog (or was it Ralph?) I watched the herd file out onto the road and head north toward Strath Creek and I began to wonder where I might encounter the first corner markers.  I soon discovered I would have time to ponder many things as I ushered the slower riders through each marked corner.  I was even able to take in some of the scenery instead of splitting my attention almost exclusively between the road immediately ahead and the ‘enthusiastic’ riders coming through from behind.

And so the day progressed with the only incident being Damien holing his radiator part way through the trip.  After lunch at Heathcote Ben did warn me that there were several riders still getting fuel which I promptly forgot about until Tony came hurtling along to warn me that there were still a couple of riders behind.  Fortunately, they didn’t take long and we were all on our way once more.

Another quick fuel stop for three riders and we were off again.  Three kids on scooters were lucky we didn’t bowl them over as we took on the final leg back to Whittlesea.
