Discussion on Crash Data Document

Since the start of 2009 there have been 36 crashes. This includes members and non-members on Club rides, members on private rides, and first time Club riders who crashed going home.  The data can be cut a number of ways. I chose to lump all the Club ride crashes together (24) and the non club rides the rest (12). Then it is sorted chronologically.

Obviously, the analysis is only as good as the data, and knowing what crashes people have had and not reported is an unknown. Nevertheless, the numbers are large.

I have categorised the crashes arbitrarily by seriousness into 4 classes: (1) rider unharmed; (2) ribs and bruising; (3) broken bones such as limbs, internal injuries and lastly, (4) fatal. Thankfully, no fatalities in the period. But there have been four Class 3 crashes on Club rides, and three on non-Club rides. All the rest of the crashes have been relatively minor.

The names and bikes have been removed from the document to protect the guilty. But age ranges have been left. A lot of the data is on the itinerary pages if you want to work it out.

The critical useful information regarding crashes per thousand kms has not been worked out. And the data goes back only one year, so no trends can be identified accurately. A lot more work is required.

There could be correlations between time of the year, weather, age, size of group, regular rider, committee person, make of bike, experience.

For the moment, draw your own conclusions.
