Sunday 26th
Ben, Julie, Misho, Pina, Kurn, Ron, Julie, Cliff,
Barbara, Carol, Gavan, John, Ian and Rob all arrived today. Paul, Jo and Gail were
staying in a house at Porepunkah. The nightly run up Buffalo began.
Interestingly this evening ride has become a bit of a ritual amongst the motorcycle
members of the Club but not to be outdone, the cyclists also have a daily
ritual where they ride into Bright for a morning coffee!
Monday
27th
That
evening Misho and Pina put on a Balkan BBQ comprising spicy sausage, meats and
salad – yum.
Tuesday
28th
Today’s
ride would be BIG encompassing; Porepunkah, Bright, Tawonga Gap, Eskdale, Mitta
Mitta, Dart mouth Dam, Mitta Mitta, back road to Tallangatta, Granya Gap,
Talgarno, Lake Rd, Bethanga, Talgarno,
Granya Gap, Tallangatta, Mt Beauty, Tawonga Gap, Bright and back to camp. As my
neck was still acting up I abstained, borrowed Chris’s bicycle and cycled into
Bright.
Wednesday
29th
Today, we would only do a short ride as Ben and Julie would head for
Dargo to visit Lyn late afternoon. Liz would also accompany us, her first Club
ride in four years! The ride would start with Tawonga Gap for a photo shoot at
the lookout then up to Falls Creek for a coffee. Next we continued down to the Omeo
Hwy, and then headed north to the end of the bitumen at Glen Valley. We then
retraced our steps back to Mount Beauty for a late lunch. Geoff, a friend of
Rob’s arrived from Shepparton.
Thursday
30th
Today most people did their ‘own thing’ with many visiting Beechworth. Paul,
Ian, Misho, Pina and Mark would do the Hotham, Omeo, Falls Creek loop. John
would join us after his tandem paragliding flight. But 10 kilometres from Harrietville
disaster struck with an ‘oily’ patch of bitumen bringing Paul down! He and the
bike hit the road hard snapping the noise cone bracket but fortunately only
bruising and soreness to Paul. Amazingly the bike would have been quite
rideable if not for the lights/instruments flopping about! Paul insisted the
others continue on and I pillioned him down to Porepunkah to pick up his van so
we could transport the bike back home.
Ha arrived today after having spent Christmas in Canberra with her
folks. As her bike was still ‘sick’ a hire-car sufficed as transport. Chris
went home.
That evening a few of us dined at the up-market resort ‘Villa Gusto’ in
the Buckland Valley.
Friday
31st
With
another hot day predicted, the ride would be up in the cooler mountains:
Harrietville, Cassilis, Swifts Creek, Bindi (dead end), Omeo, Benambra
(brilliant 8 km of high speed up hill sweepers), Omeo, Blue Duck, Falls Creek,
Mt Beauty, Tawonga Gap, Bright and Porepunkah.
Rob, Geoff, Ha, John and Ian cycled to the Berry Farm, Boynton’s Winery
and the Bright Brewery. After a communal BBQ, we settled in to welcome in the
New Year. Paul, Jo and Gail joined us for the festivities. I even had a call
from Dave and Bron as they relaxed on the Hobart
waterfront.
Saturday
1st
Rob,
John, Ha and Geoff headed home today, but Ben and Julie did an early morning
run up to The Horn. Today’s ride would start at 12 noon and would be to
Tallangatta via Tawonga Gap, Tangambalanga Road, Eskdale, Tallangatta, Old
Tallangatta north till dirt, Granya Gap,
Talgarno, Lake Rd, Bethanga, Talgarno,
Granya Gap, Tallangatta, Mt Beauty, Tawonga Gap, Bright. I bailed out at
Bethanga and headed to the ‘Fudge Shop’ in Mt. Beauty. Alas it was closed!
Jason and family called in to say hello, stayed for tea then headed
home to Narre Warren!
Sunday
2nd
The rest of us headed home today after another successful stay at
Porepunkah.
